Paulsen on 301 Tariffs: "We're Shooting Ourselves in the Foot"

Congressman Erik Paulsen (MN-03) issued the following statement today after the U.S. Trade Representative announced its final list of Section 301 tariffs and China announced $50 billion worth of tariffs in retaliation:

“I’m pleased to see some products, like certain medical devices and televisions, were removed from the U.S.T.R.’s final list,” said Congressman Paulsen. “It’s a positive outcome of bipartisan efforts in Congress to remove items in these categories from the 301 tariff list.”

In recent weeks, Paulsen led efforts in the House to urge the removal of medical devices and consumer electronics from the list of products subject to 301 tariffs.

“But on balance, today was not a good day for American jobs. We’ve imposed import tariffs that will make it more expensive to buy and produce a whole range of goods here in the United States, raising costs for consumers and job creators. And China’s retaliation measures, on soybeans in particular, will be especially damaging to Minnesota.”

“I’m even more concerned about additional lists of products to potentially be targeted with tariffs by both the U.S. and China in the future. We’re shooting ourselves in the foot and the casualties will be lost jobs and higher prices. The President needs to see that. There’s still time to ratchet down the rhetoric and de-escalate tensions before too much damage is done. I hope we do,” Paulsen said.
