Paulsen's Provision to Bolster Minnesota Craft Brewer Jobs Signed into Law

Minneapolis, Minn. – Congressman Erik Paulsen (MN-03) led a press conference at Insight Brewing in Minneapolis this afternoon about how the recently-signed Tax Reform and Jobs Act will help independent and small brewers in Minnesota grow and expand. He was joined by members of the Minnesota Craft Brewers Guild and spoke to craft brewers and craft beer enthusiasts from throughout the state.

“The craft beverage industry is doing amazing things for local economies across the country, and Minnesota, in particular, is a prime example of what its success means for jobs and economic growth,” said Congressman Paulsen.“Now, it will be easier for local breweries to focus on growing their business and the local economy by expanding, creating more jobs, and fostering a sense of community.”

“Minnesota’s craft breweries serve as strong, local economic engines, and this tax reform will help these small businesses continue to flourish and grow,”said Lauren Bennett McGinty, Executive Director of the Minnesota Craft Brewers Guild. “Minnesota craft breweries are excited to continue making great craft beer that connects neighbors and serves as a source of pride for our communities.”

Congressman Paulsen’s Craft Beverage Modernization and Tax Reform Act, which he introduced last year with Congressman Ron Kind (WI-03), was included in the tax reform package passed by Congress and signed into law by the President last month. The bipartisan initiative modernizes the tax code and streamlines regulations for producers of craft beer, cider, wine, and distilled spirits. It eliminates red tape by simplifying beer formulation approvals, simplifying beer recordkeeping and inventory rules, and allowing for the transfer of beer in bond to breweries. Additionally, it reduces administrative backlogs by ensuring proper funding for the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB).

Small brewers are increasingly playing an important role in cities and towns across Minnesota and the country thanks to a growing appreciation of craft beverages; 83 percent of Americans live within 10 miles of a local brewery.

The Minnesota Craft Brewers Guild, founded in 2000, is an organization that connects more than 130 Minnesota craft brewery and brewpub members. The Guild promotes Minnesota’s brewing industry by sponsoring festivals and special events that showcase the talent of the state's brewers. The Guild strives to educate the public that consuming beer is a pleasure that should be enjoyed in moderation.

Congressman Paulsen, a champion of small business and advocate of free enterprise, entrepreneurship, and innovation, serves on the House Ways and Means Committee, the bicameral Joint Economic Committee, and is co-chair of the Congressional Medical Technology Caucus.
